The VEGAN MOUHALABIEH recipe is here!!! And I used a STEAMER to do it.
Yes you read right, a steamer! It is a taste of 🇱🇧, super easy, so quick, so delicious, and healthy of course. It will literally teleport you to Beirut as you eat it. Ahhhhhhh, feels good to be home. Even if for 5-10mins.
Have you heard of Mouhalabieh before? If not, it is a milk based custard (in this case plant based milk), that is thickened with rice flour or corn flour (I used corn flour), that is sweetened with sugar (I used agave), and flavored with either Rose water or Orange blossom. Topped with pistachios for some added crunch, it is super yum and gives you a light and fresh taste of the Lebanon.
Here’s what you need:
- 250ml almond milk or a mix of almond, rice, spelt milk @ecomiloficial (I used the almond, rice, spelt milk)
- 2 tbsp of maïzena (corn flour) or about 25g
- 1 tbsp orange blossom or rose water
- 1-2 tbsp agave syrup (maple syrup ok too)
- raw pistachios (topping)
Here’s what you need to do:
1️⃣fill your steamer up to 1/3 with water and bring to boil
2️⃣in the meantime, add your almond milk and maïzena to a bowl and mix well to avoid lumps
3️⃣once the water is boiling, add your bowl mixture into a special steamer ceramic bowl to then place the custard mixture in the steamer
4️⃣ let it cook for 15mins, whisking every 3mins as it thickens (careful don’t burn yourself)
Add your agave syrup after 6-8mins and mix in well
5️⃣once the mix is ready and thick, take it out of the steamer to let cool
6️⃣add in your tbsp of orange blossom or rose water and mix well
7️⃣let it cool, and place in the fridge at least two hours (or overnight).
8️⃣Finally decorate with some chopped pistachios to add some crunch to your creamy custard texture
